Drainage holes ensure that excess water can drain properly from the planter or flowerpot. Without drainage, water remains at the bottom of the pot, which can cause roots to rot. Drainage holes are especially important for healthy plants in outdoor pots and large planters.
The number of drainage holes a planter needs depends on the size of the pot. Small flower pots often only need one hole, while larger planters require multiple drainage holes to allow water to drain properly. A good distribution of the holes helps prevent water accumulation.
If your plant and plant pot are outdoors, an inner liner is not necessary. In fact, water must be able to drain from the pot to prevent root rot and potential frost damage. Indoors, a plant can be placed directly in a decorative pot, but an inner liner is often recommended to catch excess water. This prevents damage to (wooden) surfaces such as floors and tables. Additionally, an inner liner makes it easier to move or repot the plant.
The correct pot size depends on the size of the plant and the root ball. Generally, choose a flower pot that is approximately 20% larger than the current nursery pot so that the roots have sufficient room to continue growing. A pot that is too large often retains moisture for longer, while a pot that is too small can restrict the plant's growth.
